Gold smuggling may rise in India

There has been always attraction towards the gold metal at all the times and especially in the Asian countries. There has been rise in the import duty on the standard gold by about 4% by the Union Finance minister Pranab Mukerjee. Due to the sudden hike in the gold import duty it has sparked a debate as it may cause arbitrage or even cause smuggling. As the debate has been increasing there has been stringent measures to have control over the gold import.

The stringent measures over the gold import has been put about by the Associate Chambers of commerce and Industry. There would be staggering point of about $100 billion reached by the India bill alone reports says. In the year 2011 India has been the largest country for the demand of gold and the estimated amount is 933.4 tonnes. However in an year India produces about two tonnes of gold even though it is the largest importer of gold.

One third of the annual demand of the gold import bill is rising and was about $33.8 billion in the year 2001-2002. Each ounce of the gold which is imported means there has been transfer of savings flow from one country to another. The gold importing will even bring in more jobs even though there is more burden involved in the process.
