Hampshire beats Somerset

Hampshire clinched the FP t20 title after beating Somerset in the final at The Rose Bowl by virtue of losing fewer wickets after the scores finished tied.

Craig Kieswetter top scored with 71 as Somerset posted 173-6.

After Jimmy Adams and Abdul Razzaq got Hampshire’s reply off to a flier, Neil McKenzie (52) and Sean Ervine (44 not out) took them to the brink of victory.

But in a tense final over they needed a scrambled leg bye off the last ball to level the scores at 173-5 to win it.

In finally getting over the finish line, Hampshire became the first side to win the domestic Twenty20 title on home soil, while Somerset have now lost the last two finals.

Queen to miss Commonwealth Games in India

The Queen will not attend the Commonwealth Games in India in October, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

It will be the first time in decades she will not be at the sporting event – previously she has attended at some point during the games, either for the opening or closing ceremony.

Prince Charles will represent the Royal Family instead.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen would not be able to attend because of the volume of her engagements this autumn.

Tiger Woods missed the cut for only the sixth time in his professional career after a horrendous second-round back nine at the Quail Hollow Championship.

The world number one, who started day two on two over, began with a birdie on the first hole in North Carolina.

But Woods, 34, went on to card three successive bogeys from the 10th before two straight double bogeys on the 14th and 15th to finish with 79.

American Billy Mayfair leads on eight under following a second-round 68.

Argentina’s Angel Cabrera is one stroke adrift while world number two and Masters champion Phil Mickelson is among a group of four Americans on six under.

Women climbs records

A South Korean climber has reached the top of Annapurna in Nepal and claimed a record for becoming the first woman to scale the world’s 14 highest peaks.

Oh Eun-sun was shown live on television planting a South Korean flag on the summit of the mountain.

But there is still a row over Ms Oh’s 2009 ascent of another Himalayan peak, with some disputing whether she reached the top.

She is due to be questioned about that climb on her return from Annapurna.

Ms Oh threw her arms up in celebration after crawling on all fours for the final stretch to the summit, the Associated Press news agency reported.
