When have you last heard about grandfather clock ? May be you would have only read it in some articles or seen it in old movies. Grandfather clock got its name from its huge size, when compared to today’s clock. They almost look like a cupboard and are kept on floors. These were the clocks that were used atleast two generations back. These clocks were an object of pride for the rich and royal people. The grandfather clocks looked very royal. They had beautiful designs carved on them. Their dials were so big and had huge chimes. One can look at the time from a far distance itself. They were not only used as a clock but as piece of furnishing or interior decoration. These clocks were kept in palaces and big houses. These clocks decorated the living room of the palace. The wood used were of costly teak wood and was well maintained.

They started disappearing since the houses became smaller and people did not find it useful to keep such a big clock that can occupy a good space of their living room. Soon wall clocks became extensively used by the people since it spared the floor space. One can find such clocks in museums now.
