26 Aug 2010 The white sands of Karkari Beach , in North land on Friday saw the death of 58 pilot whales. The whales seemed to be strangled to death and the burying process of these 50 whales have started. The whales had already lost their lives before the locals alerted the department of conservation of NZ.
The 11 whales could have survived but the heavy rains hampered their surviving. Trailers and trucks were being used by the volunteers and the whales were transported to the nearby Maitai beach. Mechanical diggers were used to move 49 whales bodies from Karikari shore to the burial site for burial. Many people saw the tragic sign and seeing the dead bodies and dealing with the heavy bodies burial was difficult. Couple of days may be taken for the burial process of the whales said a spokesman.
During last 2007 the same beach saw the death of 101 pilot whales and no explanation for this has been found. The mass stranding of whales has been seen commonly in the sea shores of NZ. When one whale fall sick the sickness is spread to other whales as other whales live as society and hence mass strands happen. Pilot whales are members from the whale family and they behave more like whales say experts.
